Without question, the biggest question I get from clients prior to their family session is “What should we wear?” I get it. I’ve stressed on outfits myself. Deciding what everyone wears is lucrative. You’ve spent the time and resources to book a session and now you want to make sure that you have images to match your vision. With endless options and styles the process can be overwhelming, but I do have some good news. There is NO wrong choice when it comes to deciding on YOUR personal style. After all, you know your family best.
The first piece of advice I give clients is to be yourself. This is not the time to try a new trend or go too over the top. You will look back on those images with regret because they won’t reflect your true self. Be true to who you are. You will be more comfortable during the session and much happier long term.
I hope to give more tips and tricks to wardrobe planning, but for today I want to stick with how to “One Stop Shop.” Planning your outfits is hard enough but it can be such an added hassle to go from store to store trying to piece together options…..especially when those options don’t go together as well as you had visioned. I’m going to walk you through a recent session I styled using only pieces from Old Navy.
Shopping for a session at a single store is advantageous for a couple reasons. It saves us the time of going from store to store, but it also saves us money because we aren’t buying things in hopes that they will work. More importantly, however, it makes the process easier because store inventory is typically filled with items in the same styles, colors, and themes.
I began my shopping trip knowing that I wanted a Christmas feel to the images with a touch of woodsy for the outdoor setting. I typically begin wardrobe planning with girl (myself or my daughter). I do this because more often than not it’s the female that has the pattern or bolder color in the wardrobe scheme. When I’m selecting items for my boys I keep them more neutral and complimentary.
I found this top for my daughter (which she LOVED by the way) because it’s so soft and flowy. The green jeggings were a perfect compliment to them and just the right amount of added color. For my son I thought I would keep him very neutral, but I saw the bear thermal shirt and then knew I had to have the jacket to make the outfit more polished.

I hope this post helped you in some ways with your future wardrobe planning. I challenge you to one stop shop for your next session. Keep in mind you might already have items in your closet as well. Shopping for your session does NOT need to break the bank.
